Refurbished Motorola G series in India: the one date to check before you pay

A used Moto G is easy to judge, because the facts that decide the deal are public. Here is the security-support date to look up, the panel and charging-port checks that matter on this line, and the point where a G stops being the right buy.

Refurbished Motorola G series in India: the one date to check before you pay — GradeGuard guide

A used Motorola G is one of the easiest phones in India to judge, because almost everything that decides the deal is published somewhere. This guide gives you the one date to look up before you pay, the two hardware checks that matter on this line, and the point where a G stops being the right buy.

Why there are so many used Moto G units right now

Motorola’s India share rose from 4.6% in Q1 2024 to 8.9% in Q1 2026, moving it from 9th place to 5th, on IDC Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker data reported by TelecomLead. Those phones are now coming back into the second-hand market: more choice, lower prices, and more sellers who do not know what they are holding.

The software is why most people pick this line

Motorola’s Android skin is now called Hello UI, replacing the older My UX name. In its moto g57 Power review, FoneArena describes it as “stock with added moto features”.

Beebom’s Hello UI review backs that up: “it’s good to see Moto retaining its bloatware-free nature, with only Facebook and LinkedIn coming pre-installed”, and both can be removed. The same review is honest about the other side, calling out ads in the Weather app and in Moto Hub. The review does not say whether those can be switched off, so treat them as part of the package until you have checked the app settings on the handset in front of you.

That matters more on a second-hand phone: less is left behind after a factory reset, and fewer background apps sit on a two-year-old chip.

Look up one date before you pay

Every phone has a date after which the maker stops shipping security patches. endoflife.date, a community-run tracker, lists these model by model. Its dates are approximate estimates, not a Motorola announcement, but they are the clearest public list there is.

ModelListed releaseSecurity support listed until
moto g54 5GSeptember 202330 June 2027
moto g45 5GSeptember 202430 September 2026
moto g57 / g57 PowerNovember 202530 June 2028

The tracker’s general note on the brand: “Motorola devices typically receive security updates for 2–3 years. Phones that launch on any version of Android will typically be supported for one upgrade to the next major version of Android.”

The moto g45 5G is the worked example. It launched on Android 14 in August 2024, picked up stable Android 15 in March 2025 as firmware VIUG35H.75-14, and its listed security window closes at the end of this month.

In plain terms: the phone does not stop working. Calls, UPI and your banking app keep running. What stops is new patches from Motorola. If patches matter to you, that is decided by the model you pick, not the brand.

“Moto G” is not one update policy

  • moto g57 Power — 1 major OS update and 3 years of security updates, per Beebom and FoneArena.
  • Motorola Edge 60 Fusion — “3 major OS upgrades and 4 years of security patches”, per GSMArena’s review.
  • moto g75 — launched with “the promise of five Android OS upgrades and six years of security updates”, as GSMArena reported.

One family, three different answers. Ask for the exact model name, then look it up.

The panel check that matters on this line

Most Moto G phones use an IPS LCD screen, not OLED. The moto g45 is a 6.5-inch 720 x 1600 IPS LCD at 120Hz behind Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The moto g57 Power is a 6.72-inch IPS LCD at 120Hz behind Gorilla Glass 7i, which FoneArena found reaches 1050 nits peak brightness.

Because these are LCD panels, burn-in is not what you hunt for. Four things are:

  • Backlight bleed. Open a full black image in a dark room and look along the edges for patches of glow.
  • Dead or stuck pixels. Cycle a full white, full black and full red image and look closely.
  • Touch dead zones. Open the dialler and drag one finger slowly across the whole screen, corners included. Numbers should keep registering everywhere.
  • The wrong panel entirely. A cheap aftermarket display is a common hidden repair on a used phone; our guide on how to tell an original display from an aftermarket one covers the tells.

One exception: the moto g85 5G is the curved pOLED model, a 6.67-inch FHD+ 120Hz panel under Gorilla Glass 5, launched in July 2024 from Rs 17,999. There, look for faint ghosting of the status bar on a grey background, and for stray touches along the curved edge.

The charging-port check that matters on this line

The g45 and the g57 Power both use USB Type-C 2.0. The g45 charges at 18W wired. The g57 Power charges at 30W, and FoneArena’s review found it took about 45 minutes to reach 50% and close to two hours to fill its 7000 mAh cell using the bundled 33W charger.

The port gets used several times a day for two years, so test it:

  • Plug the cable in and wiggle it gently. There should be no play, and the charging icon must not flicker.
  • Shine a torch into the port. Compressed lint is a common reason a port “stopped working”.
  • Charge for ten minutes and watch the speed the phone reports on the lock screen.
  • Try a second cable before blaming the phone. Cables fail more often than ports.
  • Look for green or white crust around the pins — corrosion, which points to water.

Water resistance is not the same across this line. GSMArena lists the g45 as having a “water-repellent design” with no IP number at all, while the g57 Power carries IP64 plus MIL-STD-810H. Neither is a phone to take swimming.

We do not publish any battery figure on a phone listing. Judge how it charges and holds up in your first week — the seven-day replacement window exists for that.

Where a used Moto G beats a new phone at the same money

Do not decide this on brand. Three comparisons settle it, all using numbers you can look up.

  1. Chip generation. The g45 runs a Snapdragon 6s Gen 3, the g57 Power a Snapdragon 6s Gen 4. Compare generation against generation.
  2. Screen and glass. Compare resolution honestly — 720 x 1600 is not FHD+ — and read the full glass name, because Gorilla Glass 3 and Gorilla Glass 7i are different generations of the same brand.
  3. Remaining security window. Subtract today’s date from the support date you looked up. Most buyers skip this one.

A worked example from our shelf. The Motorola G45 5G 128GB — Brilliant Blue (Refurbished) is Rs 8,962 here, under the Rs 10,999 the 4GB/128GB version launched at in August 2024, as Business Today reported. On tests one and two it holds up well for the money. On test three it loses, because its listed patch window closes this month. That is the real trade: a phone for a parent or a second SIM is a different decision from the phone that holds your main bank account.

What we check, and what you check

Every unit goes through a 41-point bench check before listing, and the grade you see is defined on our condition grading page. Each phone carries a six-month warranty and a seven-day replacement window, with free delivery to every pin code in India, cash on delivery only — no advance, no COD fee.

One check stays with you, by design. The IMEI is printed on your invoice, and you run the free government check yourself, so the result comes from the government and not from us. Our guide on the CEIR IMEI check takes about thirty seconds, and it is worth doing whoever you buy from.

When it arrives, work through the first ten minutes with a refurbished phone before you move your SIM across. To see what is on the shelf, browse refurbished Motorola phones.

Common questions

How long does a Moto G get software updates?

It depends on the exact model, not on the G badge. The moto g57 Power was launched with 1 major OS update and 3 years of security updates, as Beebom and FoneArena both reported. The moto g75 launched with a promise of five OS upgrades and six years of patches, as GSMArena reported. Always look up the model you are being offered.

Is a two-year-old Moto G still safe to use once security updates stop?

The phone keeps working normally. Calls, UPI, WhatsApp and banking apps do not stop. What stops is new security patches from Motorola, so the phone stops getting fixes for newly found flaws. Many people are fine with that on a second phone or a parent's phone, and less comfortable with it on the phone holding their main bank account. It is your call, and it is easier to make once you have looked up the date.

Does the Moto G45 have an OLED screen?

No. GSMArena lists the moto g45 as a 6.5-inch 720 x 1600 IPS LCD at 120Hz behind Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The moto g57 Power is also IPS LCD. The curved pOLED model in this family is the moto g85 5G. Because most G phones are LCD, screen burn-in is not the thing to check; backlight bleed, dead pixels and touch dead zones are.

Is a Moto G waterproof?

Not across the line, and the difference matters on a used unit. GSMArena lists the moto g45 as having a water-repellent design with no IP rating at all, while the moto g57 Power carries IP64 plus MIL-STD-810H. Neither is built for swimming. On any used phone, check the charging port with a torch for green or white crust, which points to water having been inside.

What do you tell buyers about the battery on a used Motorola?

We do not publish a battery figure on any phone listing. Our grades describe cosmetic condition only, and they are defined on the condition grading page. Judge how the phone charges and lasts during your own first week. Every phone carries a six-month warranty and a seven-day replacement window, which is exactly what that window is for.

How do I know a used Moto G is not stolen or blocked?

Check the IMEI yourself. Dial *#06# on the phone to see it, then run it through the free government CEIR check. We print the IMEI on your invoice so you can run that check independently — the answer comes from the government, not from us. Our CEIR IMEI check guide walks through it in about thirty seconds.
