Battery health on a used phone: what 85%, 90% and 100% actually mean

The one number that decides whether a used phone is a bargain or a daily annoyance — how to read it yourself where the phone supports it, where the real cut-offs are, and the three ways it gets faked.

Battery health on a used phone: what 85%, 90% and 100% actually mean — GradeGuard guide

Battery health is the single number that decides whether a used phone is a bargain or a daily annoyance. It is also the number sellers are least honest about. Here is what it measures, how to read it yourself, and where the real cut-off sits.

What the percentage actually measures

It is not how full the battery is. It is maximum capacity as a share of the capacity the battery had when it left the factory. A phone reading 87% will hold 87% of the charge a brand-new one of the same model holds. If the new one gave you eleven hours of screen time, this one gives you a bit under ten.

Two things follow from that, and both matter when you are buying.

  • The percentage is relative to that model. 85% on a phone with a 5,000 mAh battery is still more usable capacity than 95% on one with 3,200 mAh.
  • It says nothing about peak power delivery. A battery can read 88% and still shut the phone down at 20% on a cold morning, because the cell’s internal resistance has risen. Cycle count tells you more about this than the headline figure does.

How to read it yourself, in thirty seconds

iPhone

Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. You get Maximum Capacity as a percentage, and on iOS 17 and later, Cycle Count under the same screen. If the phone says “Unknown Part” or “Important Battery Message”, the battery is not an Apple cell — which is not automatically bad, but it must be disclosed to you before you buy.

Samsung

Samsung hides it. Dial *#0228# to reach the battery status screen, which shows voltage and temperature but not a percentage. The reliable route is Settings → Battery and device care → Diagnostics → Battery status, which reports Good / Normal / Weak. For a real number, install AccuBattery and let it learn through two full charge cycles.

Other Android phones

Android 14 and later expose a manufacture date and cycle count at Settings → Battery → Battery health on phones that implement it — Pixel and Nothing do, most others do not yet. Otherwise AccuBattery is the practical answer. Dialler codes like *#*#4636#*#* open a testing menu on some builds, but on most 2023-onwards phones the battery page in it has been removed.

Where the real cut-offs are

ReadingWhat it means in daily useWorth paying for?
95–100%Indistinguishable from new. Usually a phone under a year old, or one with a recently replaced cell.Yes, if the price gap over 90% is small. Check why it is this high.
90–94%You will not notice a difference unless you were already charging twice a day. This is the sweet spot. Most of the saving, none of the compromise.
85–89%One extra top-up on a heavy day. Fine for most people.Yes, if the price reflects it — expect 5–8% less than a 90%+ unit.
80–84%Noticeably shorter days. Apple’s own threshold for “service recommended” is 80%.Only with a clear discount, or if you plan to replace the battery anyway.
Below 80%Needs a new battery now. Treat the phone as priced without one.Subtract the replacement cost from the asking price before you decide.

Most Android phones do not report a battery-health figure, so rather than guess, our phone listings do not print one.

Cycle count: the number that is harder to fake

One cycle is 100% of the battery’s capacity used, in any combination — two half-discharges make one cycle. Manufacturers rate phone batteries for roughly 500 cycles to 80% capacity, and newer iPhones for 1,000.

Why it matters: capacity percentage is calculated by the phone’s own software and can be reset by cheap replacement boards or a battery re-flash. Cycle count, on an iPhone, is written to the battery’s own chip. A phone claiming 100% health with 900 cycles is telling you two contradictory things, and the cycle count is the one to believe.

A rough guide for a phone you are buying today: under 300 cycles is lightly used, 300–600 is normal for a two-year-old phone, and over 800 means the battery is near the end of its designed life whatever the percentage says.

What a replacement costs in India

Useful arithmetic when you are deciding whether a cheap phone with a tired battery is actually cheap. Prices as of September 2026, for a fitted replacement:

  • Apple authorised service, iPhone 12–14: ₹5,400–₹7,100 depending on model
  • Samsung authorised service, mid-range: ₹2,300–₹3,800
  • Samsung authorised service, S-series flagship: ₹4,200–₹5,500
  • Competent third-party shop, OEM-grade cell: ₹1,400–₹2,800 — cheaper, but on an iPhone it will trigger the “Unknown Part” notice permanently

So a phone at 78% health selling ₹4,000 below an equivalent at 92% is not a discount at all if it is an iPhone. On a mid-range Samsung, the same ₹4,000 gap is a genuine saving.

Three ways the number gets manipulated

  1. A re-flashed battery chip. Aftermarket cells ship with programmable chips that can be told to report 100%. The giveaway is a cycle count of 0 or 1 on a phone that is visibly two years old.
  2. A screenshot from a different phone. If a listing shows a Battery Health screenshot, ask for one that also shows the serial number in Settings → General → About, and check it matches the IMEI on the invoice.
  3. “Up to 90%” as a category claim. A grade that promises a range is promising the bottom of the range. Ask for the figure on the actual unit before you pay.

How to protect the battery you end up with

  • Keep it between roughly 20% and 80% where convenient. Full-to-empty cycling is what wears lithium cells fastest.
  • Turn on Optimised Charging (iPhone) or Protect Battery (Samsung, caps at 85%). Both cost you almost nothing and slow the decline measurably.
  • Heat is worse than cycles. A phone left on a dashboard in a Lucknow May will lose more capacity in a week than in a month of normal use.
  • Fast charging is not the villain it is made out to be, but charging fast while the phone is hot is.

The short version

Ask for two numbers, not one: maximum capacity and cycle count. Anything at 88% or above with fewer than 500 cycles will feel like a new phone. Below 80%, price the battery replacement in. And if a seller quotes a battery-health percentage for an Android phone that does not report one, ask exactly where that number came from.
